CD18-positive cells (beta-chain of antigen LFA-1), cells CD11b+, CD4+,
CD8+ and CD3+ were quantified in the blood of 32 acute leukemia patie
nts, 38 chronic lymphoid leukemia patients and 15 mature-cell lymphosa
rcoma patients. A standard reaction of indirect immunofluorescence was
employed using ICO monoclonal antibodies. Alterations in the content
and in the proportions of the main effector populations in the periphe
ral blood of hemoblastosis patients were observed. These were more app
arent in the unfavourable course of acute leukemia and in chronic lymp
hoid leukemia. The detect was more marked in CD18+ and CD11b+ cells ex
pressing antigen LFA-1. Reduced expression of LFA-1 considerably contr
ibutes to impairment of antitumor resistance in hemoblastosis.
