A linear optimal proportional plus integral (PI) controller is designe
d for a lateral aircraft model such that an approximately decoupled cl
osed-loop step response is obtained for the roll angle and side-slip a
ngle while the linear optimal feedback gains are simultaneously minimi
zed. A standard mathematical programming algorithm is employed to calc
ulate the diagonal state weighting matrix Q such that the specificatio
ns are satisfied. The synthesis procedure consists of the iterative mi
nimization of a functional where at each iteration step a linear optim
al control problem is solved.
