Abstract
The phylogenetic position of Desulfurella acetivorans was determined b y comparative 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Its branching point appeared to be equidistant to members of the four currently recognized subclas ses of Proteobacteria and the Wolinella/Campylobacter group for which the epsilon subclass has been tentatively proposed. The branching orde r was recoverable by different treeing algorithms and the remote relat ionship between Desulfurella acetivorans and Wolinella and its relativ es supported by certain common sequence properties. 16S rDNA/RNA signa ture nucleotides are provided for the epsilon (epsilon) subclass of Pr oteobacteria that should establish this taxon in microbial systematics .
