Phascolarctobacterium faecium gen.nov., spec.nov. has been described f
or Gram-negatively staining, nonsporing, chemoorganotrophic, pleomorph
ic rods that were isolated from koala faeces. Propionate is the main e
nd product of succinate fermentation and growth of satellite colonies
occurs around colonies of succinate producing Escherichia coli cells.
Phylogenetically, the novel genus groups within the Sporomusa branch o
f the Clostridium/Bacillus subphylum of Gram-positive bacteria and is
a neighbor of Acidaminococcus fermentans.
