Abstract
The characteristic pink colour of undoped ZnWO4 single crystals having minimal Fe2+ concentration is attributed primarily to Cr3+ impurity i ons. Other suggested sources of this colour, namely OH(-)ions, W5+ typ e dopants which enhance the crystals transparency in the visible regio n are shown to be charge-compensated non-locally by Fe3+ ions.
