The French law on psychiatric hospitalizations without patient consent
was revised on June 27, 1993. Failure to adhere scrupulously to new a
dmission requirements can have serious consequences. The field of appl
ication of the law leaves room for subjectivity, requiring that the ph
ysician evaluate on a case-by-case basis the sometimes conflicting goa
ls of caring for the patient and protecting his or her individual righ
ts.
