In the article the possibilities of the calculation of distillation cu
rves are discussed on the basis of empirical thermodynamic models for
activity coeficients. A set of all possible variants of distillation c
urves in ternary mixtures is also presented. These ternary mixtures ar
e classified on the basis of the number and the type of binary azeotro
pic points. The set of the diagrams presented represents a very useful
tool in the selection of the strategy of separation of individual com
ponents by distillation and in the checking of the existence or non-ex
istence of ternary azeotropic points. The course of the distillation c
urves should also serve as a guide in the experimental determination o
f liquid-vapour equilibria in ternary mixtures, especially in the sele
ction of the composition of ternary mixtures. It is advisable to inves
tigate particularly the concentration region lying in the proximity of
the destilation curve. In the some region the thermodynamic descripti
on should be thoroughly checked.
