Hypertext is an electronic document through which a user can quickly a
ccess information. Using a mouse, readers click on words or sentences
to move easily between related topics in the document. This paper pres
ents a model for the representation of design codes which combines hyp
ertext with graphs and sentences in mathematical logic. Each of these
three forms of representation reveals different properties of the desi
gn codes and has the potential to provide valuable support for both de
signers and code writers. A partial investigation into the logical str
ucture of the British Code BS5950 for steel design is also presented.
