A simple two-state model is applied to estimate the nonlocal contribut
ion to the Frenkel state polarizability, resulting from the coupling o
f that state with charge transfer excitons. The results suggest that i
n the S-1 state of anthracene and tetracene the polarizability may be
dominated by nonlocal terms. An explanation of the large discrepancies
between the polarizabilities measured in slightly different experimen
tal conditions is offered.
