We describe light microscopic and scanning microscopic observations in
a population of Trachelomonas characterized by a tuberculate lorica (
in mature cells), a ring of perforations around the flagellum pore and
a slight ridge made up of free or joint tubercles. A granular substru
cture of the lorica is also evident. We discuss the inclusion of this
population in one of the different taxa of the subsections Sphaericae
and Ellipticae which have tuberculated lorica, and we conclude that ou
r material represents a new varietal taxon of Trachelomonas tuberculat
a Middelh.
