Ternary copolymerizations of N-antipyryl acrylamide (NAA) or antipyrin
e acryloyl thiourea (APAT) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) [or vinyl ac
etate(VA)] and acrylonitrile (AN) were carried out in DMF at 70 degree
s in the presence of a free radical initiator. Experimental terpolymer
ization data agreed well with calculations based on the Alfrey-Goldfin
ger equation. The determinations of unitary, binary and ternary azeotr
opes of the various systems studied were easily handled by a computer.
The ternary azeotropic composition for APAT-MMA-AN was 64.8:15.2:20:0
mol%. Pseudo azeotropic regions are identified where the deviation be
tween feed and polymer compositions is very small.
