Several thermal degradative methods were employed for elucidation of s
tructures of two furfuraldehyde insoluble and infusible resins. A comb
ination of pyrolysis at reduced pressure, (direct-inlet pyrolysis)-(ma
ss spectrometry) and flash-pyrolysis in GC/MS and GC/FT-i.r. systems l
ed to the identification of 39 pyrolysis products. From analysis of th
e information, three structural precursors of pyrolysate composition w
ere established. The major structural features of the resins are propo
sed.
