Abstract
In November 1667, the great clock in the tower of the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, began to strike the hours. It incorporated the horary inven tions of Galileo Galilei, the pinwheel type of escapement and the pend ulum regulator. The origin of this historic clock, its installation an d subsequent history are here described and illustrated.
