Novel bis(phenoxyalkyl)sulfane podands were synthesized and characteri
zed in view of their complexing properties toward Ag-I and Hg-II by li
quid-liquid extraction investigations using the two-phase system metal
salt(AgNO3, HgCl2)-picric acid-H2O/podand-chloroform. A pronounced st
ructure influence on the extraction properties has been observed in ca
se of Ag-I, whereas generally the complex formation tendency toward Hg
-II is limited. ydroxy-3-oxapentyloxy)-3-phenoxy-prop-2-yl]sulfane 4c
gives the highest extractabilities for Ag-I. Molecular modeling of the
podands and their A(I) and Hg-II complexes shows significant differen
ces of the complex structures and indicates therewith the reasons of t
he different complexing properties.
