A procedure is described for the design of quadrilayer structures that
enhance the polar Kerr effect in magneto-optic recording media. An es
sential feature of the method is a systematic approach that enables th
e achievement of phase optimization, which results in the elimination
of the undesirable effects of parasitic Kerr ellipticity. Examples are
presented based on the Co/Pt superlattice and amorphous TbFeCo. The s
pectral and angular performances of fabricated devices are compared wi
th theory.
