We describe the clinical course and histopathologic findings in a rhes
us macaque (Macaca mulatta) which developed a systemic inflammatory di
sorder resembling systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The manifestatio
ns of the SLE included antinuclear antibody, hemolytic anemia, membran
oproliferative glomerulonephritis, and arthritis. To our knowledge, sp
ontaneously occurring SLE has not previously been described in nonhuma
n primates.
