We present a thermodynamic theory of solubility of gases, vapors, and
low-molecular-weight liquids in glassy polymers. We show that the dist
inctive features of sorption in glassy systems may be simply related t
o their elastic properties. As an illustration we analyze the data of
vinyl chloride monomer absorption in poly(vinyl chloride) at various t
emperatures and vapor pressures and find a quantitative agreement with
the model without any adjustable parameters.
