Various chromophores useful for second-order nonlinear optics (NLO) ha
ve been attached to a preformed polystyrene backbone via palladium-cat
alyzed carbonylation reactions. In favorable circumstances the graftin
g reaction was nearly quantitative, leading to a high concentration of
NLO-active chromophores in the resulting polymers. The polymers obtai
ned in this way were amorphous, exhibited good solubility, and possess
ed high glass transition temperatures.
