The synthesis of nine-vertex metallacarbathiaboranes [5-(eta5-C5Me5)-a
rachno-5,4,6-MCSB6H10], where M=Rh or Ir, can be engineered either fro
m the ten-vertex substrate [arachno-6,9-CSB8H12] by a site-specific ad
dition of the metal centre that is accompanied by the directed elimina
tion of specified boron cluster vertices, or by the directed successiv
e removal of two boron vertices from [arachno-6,9-CSB8H12], or of one
vertex from [arachno-4,6-CSB7H11] prior to the site-specific addition
of the metal centre.
