Theoretical models and calculation methods for the parameters of visib
le DFB lasers were considered. The effective Q-factor approach, being
asymptotically accurate, allowed us to reduce the master equations of
DFB laser to the simple balance equations used to describe a system wi
th lumped parameters. Generation conditions for lasers with pump-induc
ed stochastic DFB were investigated and the possibilities of optical b
istability and ultrashort pulse production explored. Analytical expres
sions suitable for practical evaluation of parameters of ultrashort pu
lse generation were obtained. A review of experimental results and an
analysis of properties and merits of DFB lasers as sources of ultrasho
rt pulses were given.
