The hydrogen produced after major accidents in a reactor may entail fi
re or even explosion hazards. Its concentration must therefore be kept
below an ignitable mixture at all costs. as complete inerting of the
reactor building is not possible. Catalytic recombinators have been de
veloped for the detection of hydrogen accumulations. Ignition coils wi
th independent electric power supplies cause even minute amounts of hy
drogen to burn off before dangerous volumes can accumulate.
