A simple route for the solid-state exchange of lanthanum in protonic b
eta zeolite is described. The method is shown by XRD and energy disper
sive spectrometry analyses to be much more efficient than a classical
exchange in solution. It is demonstrated that in spite of the very sim
ple experimental conditions used (no vacuum or gas flow),the solid-sta
te reaction between lanthanum chloride and beta zeolite does not provo
ke any collapse of the zeolitic structure or dealumination. The result
ing solid is shown to be active in the alkylation of benzene by isopro
panol.
