Abstract
A study on the susceptibility of various iron-boron-silicon metallic g lasses (electronic materials) to stress-corrosion cracking has been co nducted. Stress corrosion tests were carried out on thin metallic ribb ons of Fe78B13Si9, Fe81B13.5Si3.5C2, Fe66Co18B15Si and Fe77B16Cr2Si5 i n 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% sulphuric acid solutions at room temperature. The tests were performed under a constant-strain condition in the var ious solutions until complete separation of the ribbons occurred. Typi cal fractographic techniques were used for analysing the failure of th e glasses. The results indicated that the susceptibility of the glasse s to stress-corrosion cracking varies only as a function of the amplit ude of the strain. However, the susceptibility is independent of the s olution concentration and the additions of carbon, chromium and cobalt to the glass.
