A laboratory-based chamber has been employed to quantify the effects o
f dry deposition of SO2, NO2 and NO pollutant gases at realistic prese
ntation rates, with and without ozone as oxidant, on the degradation o
f Pentelic marble with different extents of surface wetting. From the
equivalent calcium yields, giving quantification of the extent of reac
tions, the importance of pollutant gas solubility in surface water, an
d oxidants for pollutant gas transformations to the respective acids o
n the relatively pure marble are revealed.
