J. Murthy et al., VOYAGER OBSERVATIONS OF DIFFUSE FAR-ULTRAVIOLET CONTINUUM AND LINE EMISSION IN ERIDANUS, The Astrophysical journal, 419(2), 1993, pp. 739-745
We present Voyager observations of the diffuse far-ultraviolet radiati
on field (912 angstrom-1150 angstrom) in two regions of the Eridanus s
uperbubble. A strong continuum is present in both locations which we h
ave identified with starlight scattered by interstellar dust. From the
level of this emission (1620 +/- 150 photons CM-2 S-1 sr-1 angstrom-1
) we have placed a lower limit of about 0.3 on the albedo if the scatt
ering is isotropic and an upper limit of about 0.8 on the phase functi
on asymmetry factor (g) if the grains are perfectly reflecting. In add
ition, 0 VI (lambdalambda 1032/1038) emission with an intensity of 28.
7 +/- 2.8 x 10(4) photons cm-2 S-1 sr-1 is apparent in one of the two
locations, and C III (977 angstrom) is visible in both locations with
intensities of 2.14 +/- 0.75 x 10(4) and 18.9 +/- 1.7 x 10(4) photons
cm-2 S-1 sr-1. The line ratios indicate shock velocities on the order
of 90 km s-1 in one of the targets and 180 km s-1 in the other, which
is located near a peak of the C-band X-ray emission.
