In an open, multicenter, three-armed, randomized study, we compared th
e effects of short-term (2 weeks) and continuous addition of the antia
ndrogen cyproterone acetate to the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormo
ne agonist buserelin to those of orchidectomy in patients with advance
d prostate cancer. No significant differences among the three treatmen
t arms with respect to response rate, subjective response, time-to-pro
gression, overall survival, and cancer deaths were observed. It was co
ncluded that the short-term or continuous addition of cyproterone acet
ate to buserelin administered intranasally did not improve treatment r
esults compared to orchidectomy only.
