The problem of ultrasonic backscattering of longitudinal and shear wav
es normally incident on a solid cylindrical scatterer embedded in a so
lid matrix is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Calculati
ons of the backscatter form function, f(infinity)(theta,ka), as a func
tion of ka are compared in the range 2.0 < ka < 9.0 with experimental
measurements (using a short pulse-echo technique) in the same range fo
r both copper and steel inclusions embedded in an epoxy matrix. The re
sults show very good agreement between theory and experiment highlight
ing NDE and material characterization applications.
