More than half of the projected lifespan of the EFIA Industrial Develo
pment Fund (IDF) for Portugal has now been completed, although the spa
tial efficacy of help available to Portuguese industry through this me
dium has met with a variable level of success. The main argument shows
that, whilst overall management of the fund continues to be spatially
and sectorally biased in favour of those companies in regions least i
n need, there does appear to be a fresh potential for industrial devel
opment in some of the more disadvantaged areas of Portugal. A series o
f recommendations points to improved advertising for the IDF so as to
ensure that recent improvements continue and to allow for the Fund's r
egional development potential to be realised.
