The magnetic field line equations for an axisymmetric plasma confining
system can be cast in a hamiltonian form, We apply a general procedur
e for this analogy in the case of cylindrical symmetry and use the res
ult in order to describe two typical MHD equilibria. The case of a gen
eral, nonintegrable perturbation is considered, resonances being treat
ed with use of secular perturbation theory. We study the magnetic isla
nd formation near these resonances.
