L. Ogaard et P. Esbjerg, OBSERVATIONS ON HIBERNATION OF CUTWORMS, AGROTIS-SEGETUM SCHIFF (LEP,NOCTUIDAE), Journal of applied entomology, 116(4), 1993, pp. 326-332
The vertical position and the mortality of hibernating cutworms (Agrot
is segetum) were investigated using sampled larvae released in small h
ibernation plots in the field. The results show that the larvae hibern
ate in a position 3-7 cm below the soil surface. Some specimens may st
ay as deep as 10-14 cm. After hibernation the larvae move to a pupatio
n position at 1-3 cm's depth. The larvae seem to hibernate successfull
y with moderate mortality in cold as well as mild winters. A high leve
l of mortality from an insect pathogen was recorded in one case.
