The transformation driving force for indentation cracking in phase-tra
nsformation-toughened ZrO2 ceramics is confirmed with the direct crack
measurement method. This driving force is produced by expansion of th
e plastic zone beneath the indenter due to stress-induced transformati
on, and it promotes the extension of the indentation cracks. The drivi
ng force cannot be neglected when evaluating the indentation fracture
toughness of the materials.
