Abstract
A novel approach to approximate modeling for multivariable controller design of binary distillation columns is suggested. The modeling idea draws on the wave propagation phenomena characterizing distillation co lumn dynamics. The development of the model only requires knowledge ab out steady-state design data, including holdups and stationary concent ration profiles. No dynamic simulation is required to determine the mo del parameters. Typically, a fifth-order linear model is obtained. Com parison of the deduced linear approximate model with the rigorous mode l shows an excellent average match of the process nonlinearities.
