The performance of the positive electrode in a sodium/nickel chloride
cell has been investigated using a porous nickel matrix and a nickel n
ag electrode in a basic AlCl3-NaCl melt. The capacity of the porous ni
ckel electrode linearly related to the surface area, and the real capa
city density (C.cm(-2)) ofthe nickel chloride electrode was independen
t of its geometry. The capacity density significantly decreases as the
current density becomes high or as the operating temperature becomes
low especially below 225 degrees C. The dependence of the capacity den
sity on the current density and the temperature can be explained by th
e diffusion process of chloride ion in the nickel chloride layer.
