After growing strongly throughout the 1980s and peaking in 1991 with a
record 1.8 million tons in Western Europe, the consumption of polystr
yrene fell for the first time in 1992. Reasons are the slowdown of the
economic boom, the replacement of PS by cheaper PP in packaging and f
inally the overall reduction of packaging as a result of recent govern
ment regulations. New developments in packaging, in technical products
and various casings and housings as well as in processing characteris
tics should reverse this trend and open up new opportunities.
