The Markovian theory of random processes is applied to describe collis
ional relaxation of angular momentum as well as translational velocity
simultaneously. It is shown by comparing exact and approximate soluti
ons of the kinetic equation that in practical lineshape calculations t
ranslational and rotational relaxation can be considered as statistica
lly independent processes. The perturbation theory has been developed
for the case of comparatively slight Doppler broadening.
