A sensory neuropathy was diagnosed in a 4-year-old Labrador Retriever.
Clinical features included generalised ataxia and loss of myotatic re
flexes. No cranial nerve abnormalities could be detected. Motor nerve
conduction velocities were normal; measurement of sensory nerve conduc
tion velocities was not possible, as sensory nerve potentials could no
t be elicited. The condition was unresponsive to corticosteroids. Post
mortem examination was consistent with a primary neuronopathy with sec
ondary axonal atrophy in both the spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
