This study focused on family caregiving of older people in the African
American population. Specifically it used the constant comparative me
thod to describe caregiving processes in these families. In-depth inte
rviews with 17 caregivers revealed that caregiving activities were ini
tially difficult and stressful but became somewhat easier for the care
givers over time. This report describes the major process that account
ed for this difference (working-out systems) and describes the steps i
nvolved in working-out systems. Copyright (C) 1996 by W.B. Saunders Co
