Abstract
Beta-lactams with the thienamycin side chain were synthesized from alp ha-vinyl beta-lactams via oxymercuration-demercuation reaction as well as through their epoxidation, regioselective epoxide ring cleavage an d radical-induced debromination. The stereochemistry of these beta-lac tams was established by physico-chemical methods.
