Oxidation of potassium iodide with sodium persulfate in the presence o
f salts of beta, gamma and gamma,delta-unsaturated carboxylic acids aff
ords gamma-lactones in high yields at ambient temperature and with sho
rt reaction times. A beta-lactone is the major product of the reaction
with 3-butenoic acid.
