The oxidation behaviour of are-melted Mo(Si1-xAlx)(2) ingots al low an
d high temperatures was studied. At temperatures around 773 K, suppres
sion of the pest phenomenon was observed and a scale consisting of mix
ed Al/Si oxide was formed with traces of Al/Mo oxide. At 1623 K alpha-
Al2O3 layer was formed. At 1873 K the scale was made up of two oxide l
ayers, the outer consisting of mullite and SiO2 with dissolved Al2O3 a
nd the inner consisting of Al2O3. Formation of Mo5Si3 beneath the scal
e depended on the Al content of the alloys. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science
