Abstract
This study evaluates the periodontal status of adult Croatian 47,XXY m ales in order to provide further information on the effects of the sex chromosome imbalance of the periodontal shape and condition. The meas urements were taken on forty-two 47,XXY males whose haryotypes had bee n determined at the Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics. The control group consisted of 60 males and 80 females. The bone loss was measure d on orthopantomograms from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone margin. A tooth with bone loss of 5 mm or more was considered as affected. An apparent difference between the groups is evident, the p revalence of the affected teeth in the study group was 50%, respective ly bone resorption was found in 21 out of 42 males with an extra X chr omosome. The percentage of bone resorption in the control group was le ss than in males with an extra X chromosome (males 13.33%; females 11. 25%), (p<0.01). The difference between the control males and females w as not statistically significant (p>0.01). The most frequently involve d teeth in 47,XXY males were the upper and lower incisors and the lowe r premolars.
