The different parts of the digestive system of the pig situated in the
abdomen are presented. The article studies successively their physica
l characteristics, conformation (both exterior and interior) and where
appropriate their structure, their topography and inter-relationships
. The stomach, intestine, liver and pancreas are described highlightin
g the arrangements which are characteristic of the pig species and whi
ch are often intermediary between those of the Herbivores and those of
the Carnivores. The most remarkable particularities concern: the stom
ach (presence of a gastric diverticulum, a pyloric torus and two types
of mucosa, glandular and aglandular), the liver (characterised princi
pally by its lobulation, visible macroscopically) and finally the inte
stine (amongst which the ascending colon is the predominant element wh
ich determines, by its volume, the topography of the other abdominal v
iscera).
