Abstract
A numerical approach based on the finite-element method is described f or the analysis of curved optical waveguides. Curvature loss is evalua ted simultaneously with the propagation constant and the field distrib ution. Both TE-like and TM-like modes are systematically formulated. N umerical examples on the propagation characteristics of curved rib wav eguides are given. Our results for curvature loss of curved rib wavegu ides agree well with those by experiments and the method of lines.
