Odour immissions caused by existing or planned area sources such as se
wage plants, waste disposal sites or compost plants are often estimate
d with the help of special odour dispersion models. Estimation methods
of odorant flow rate, necessary for the dispersion model, which are d
escribed in scientific literature are discussed especially regarding t
he aspect of realistic prognosis of odour immissions. An alternative i
ndirect method is presented here with the help of which the emitted od
orant flow rates of area sources can be estimated. Emperical knowledge
gained by experience with odour immission prognosises on sewage plant
s, waste disposal sites and compost plants is presented in the followi
ng.
