An intracellular, inducible alginase from a marine bacterium Bacillus
was enriched 42 fold by ammonium sulfate precipitation and column chro
matography on DEAE cellulose. Thermal stability, pH optima and require
ment for monovalent cations for the enzyme were studied. Optimum pH of
the purified enzyme was 7.5 and its molecular weight, determined by e
xclusion chromatography, was 40 000 Daltons.
