Abstract
A simplified and stereocontrolled synthesis of alpha-vinyl and alpha-a lkyl beta-lactams has been achieved in open vessels under microwave ir radiation in unmodified domestic microwave ovens. These compounds - pr epared in the course of a few minutes for each reaction step (includin g catalytic transfer hydrogenation) - are convenient synthons for vari ous cis and trans carbapenems.
