Abstract
Reaction between furanoid glycals 1-3 and trichloroacetyl isocyanate y ielded a mixture of [2+2] and [4+2]cycloadducts. The isocyanate entere d a glycal molecule exclusively anti with respect to the substituent a t the C-3 carbon atom. Deprotection of the nitrogen atom in the [2+2]c ycloadduct produced stable bicyclic B-lactams 10-12.
