Abstract
Limitations of present knowledge of plasma equilibrium profiles hamper a proper identification of MHD modes. However, through continued impr ovement of both numerical calculations and experimental observations w e may witness the birth of a new kind of spectroscopy, properly called MHD spectroscopy, in the coming decade. This is illustrated by studie s of Edge Localised Modes and external excitation of Toroidal Alfven E igenmodes.
