Abstract
The drop-tube furnace is a valuable tool when attempting to simulate c oal combustion on a small scale. High heating rates, variable gas cont ents and high temperatures are all possible. A general review of curre nt conditions used for the production of chars is given along with res ults for char production under various conditions including the effect of particle size.
