This article describes a multiple-use patient monitoring and evaluatio
n system, the Treatment Progress Scales (TPS), which has been used for
the last six years on 4,600 psychiatric and chemically dependent pati
ents in a state-operated mental health facility. The system has been u
sed for patient monitoring, management information, and program evalua
tion purposes. The article summarizes these and offers a brief overvie
w of the TPS, its psychometric properties, and its advantages and disa
dvantages.
